夏目漱石の処女作であり、代表作のひとつでもある『吾輩は猫である』を読んだことがある方も多いのではないでしょうか。有名な冒頭文から始まるこの小説が誕生して100年以上経ちますが、いま読んでも新鮮な印象を与える傑作です。今回は、『吾輩は猫である』の中に登場する名言がどのように英語で表現されているのかをご紹介します。
夏目漱石と『吾輩は猫である』
1903年（明治36年）、英語教育法研究のために行った3年間に及ぶイギリス留学から帰国した夏目漱石（金之助）は、東京帝国大学と第一高等学校の教壇に立つことになります。留学生活の辛さからうつ病になった彼ですが、東京帝国大学では先任であった小泉八雲と比べられ、さらに神経を病むことに。帰国後も鬱々とした日々を送っていた夏目漱石は、文芸雑誌「ホトトギス」の編集者・高浜虚子から小説を書くことを勧められます。 こうして誕生した彼の処女作が、『吾輩は猫である』です。1905年から1906年、3部作として発表されたこの小説は、夏目家に迷い込んだ猫を題材に、猫の目線から滑稽な人間たちの暮らしを語る画期的な作品でした。1907年（明治40年）には朝日新聞社に入社し、本格的に作家としての歩みをスタートさせます。1916年（大正5年）49歳でこの世を去るまでに、夏目漱石は約100冊以上もの作品を送り出しました。
